A model name is only the beginning

A repository can tell you much more than a model leaderboard. Start with its model card and documentation to understand the intended task, the way it was developed, and the limitations the publisher discloses.

Read the license for your actual use

Openly downloadable does not mean unrestricted. Check the license attached to the specific repository and any additional conditions. A commercial application, redistribution, and internal experimentation may have different requirements.

Match the deployment to your resources

Review the documented hardware and software requirements. A model that is easy to discover may still need substantial memory or a hosted inference service. Estimate operating cost using your expected traffic and context sizes rather than a single demonstration.

Evaluate on representative examples

Choose a small set of tasks that reflect your application and record both successes and failures. Keep the model version and configuration with your results so you can repeat the evaluation after an update.
